SF-171
The SF-171 is a very long and detailed federal job application, thus making it very formidable for employment purposes. The SF-171 leaves very few unanswered questions in the mind of the individual that initially screens the applicant. It also allows more room for job history, awards, and extra curricular activities. The only draw back to this form is it's length. It almost equates to an autobiography when completed. Allow yourself up to two weeks to complete this form.
OF-612
The OPTIONAL FORM 612 is a condensed version of the SF-171. It was introduced to the federal work force in the early 1990's. The OF-612 is, beyond doubt, a much easier application to complete. It basically requests the same information as the SF-171. However, due to it's condensed nature, this application requires applicants to attach separate pages for extended job histories, extracurricular activities, etc.. Thus, the OF-612 is more restrictive and leaves room for "INFORMATION UNDERLOAD". However, with a little effort this form can be as detailed as the SF-171. Which, in turn, would require less effort from the screener to read and rate your application.
It is particularly useful for applicants who do not have extensive job-related qualifications, such as recent graduates or applicants for entry level or wage grade positions. This optional application contains information considered to be the minimum necessary to determine an applicant's qualifications. Federal agencies could not require all applicants to use the optional application, except where the agency had developed a computer-compatible version of the optional application.
Resume
The RESUME is the newest form of job submission being excepted by the federal government. As society moves toward "quicker, smaller, faster" modes of operation, Uncle Sam has reluctantly followed suit. The only advantages to the Resume is it's brevity and familiarity. The greatest disadvantages of the Resume when applying for federal employment is that it only offers a summarized version of your life's work. This alone makes for a very poor standing against the SF-171 and the OF-612. The Resume also places a heavier burden on the applicant to provide critical information that is normally not required on this form. If this information is not provided, the application may be REJECTED. We are currently developing a resume format that meets the basic application requirements for federal employment.
Although the Federal Government does not require a standard application form for most jobs, they do need certain information to evaluate your qualifications and determine if you meet legal requirements for Federal employment. If your resume or application does not provide all the information requested in the job vacancy announcement, you may lose consideration for a job. Help speed the selection process by keeping your resume or application brief and by sending only the requested material. Type or print clearly in dark ink. Here's what your resume or application must contain (in addition to specific information requested in the job vacancy announcement):
